How long it lasts
How long does a spray tan last?
A professionally applied spray tan usually looks its best for about five to seven days and fades gradually over roughly seven to ten. It fades rather than washes off because the colour sits in the dead surface cells of your skin and leaves as those cells shed. Hot water, exfoliation, chlorine and shaving all speed that up. Why a spray tan fades instead of washing off, what shortens it, what stretches it, and how to time one so it is at its best on the day that matters.

Why does a spray tan fade instead of washing off?
Because the colour is not sitting on your skin, it is made inside it. The active ingredient reacts with the outermost layer of your skin to produce brown pigment, and that layer is made of cells your body is already shedding. You are not washing off a dye. You are losing the cells that are holding the colour, a few at a time, the way you always do.

That is why a spray tan goes softly rather than in patches, if it was applied well. It is also why nothing you can buy makes it last for weeks. Anything that speeds up how fast your skin sheds takes days off the tan, and there are more of those in an ordinary week than most people expect. The mechanism is explained further on what is actually in a spray tan.
What does each day actually look like?
Roughly this, for most people, most of the time. Your own skin decides where in the range you land.
| When | What it looks like | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| The first few hours | A cosmetic bronzer shade that is darker than your final colour. This is guide colour, not the tan. | Keep it dry. No sweating, no swimming, nothing tight. |
| After your first rinse | The bronzer goes and the real colour is underneath, lighter than what rinsed away. | Do not panic at the water running brown. That is guide colour, not your tan. |
| Days one to three | The tan is at full depth and most even. | Moisturise daily. This is the single thing that buys you extra days. |
| Days four to six | Still even, softening slightly. This is the sweet spot for photographs. | Keep showers short and warm rather than hot. |
| Days seven to ten | Fading, and starting to go first where skin is thinnest or rubs. | Moisturise, or exfoliate deliberately and start clean. |
What makes a spray tan fade faster?
Everything on this list works the same way: it removes surface skin sooner than your body would have. None of it is a mistake exactly, it is just a trade you should make knowingly.
| What | Why it matters | How much |
|---|---|---|
| Long hot showers and baths | Heat and soaking soften and lift surface cells. | Large |
| Exfoliating scrubs and mitts | This is the fastest way to remove a tan, which is exactly what they are for. | Largest |
| Shaving | A razor takes surface skin with the hair. | Large, and visible in strips |
| Chlorinated pools and hot tubs | Chlorine is a bleaching agent and hot tubs add heat and time. | Large |
| Salt water | Salt is abrasive and drying. | Moderate |
| Hard exercise | Sweat and friction, especially where clothing rubs. | Moderate |
| Dry skin | Dry skin flakes, and flaking skin takes the colour with it. | Moderate, and entirely preventable |
What actually makes it last longer?
Far less than the internet suggests, and one thing matters more than all the rest combined. Moisturise, every day, generously, starting the day after your tan. Hydrated skin holds together and sheds slowly. Dry skin flakes, and every flake is colour leaving.
Ninety percent of how long your tan lasts was decided before you walked in, by how well you prepped, and after you left, by whether you moisturised. The appointment itself is the smallest part of it.
The rest is small and worth doing anyway: shorter and cooler showers, pat dry rather than rub, skip the exfoliating products, and keep the razor for the day before your next appointment rather than the middle of this one. The full routine is on the prep and aftercare guide.
Can I top it up in the sun?
You can lie in the sun with a spray tan on, but it will not extend it, and it is worth being clear about why that is a bad plan rather than just an ineffective one. A spray tan gives you no protection from ultraviolet light, so the sunburn risk is exactly what it would be on bare skin. Health Canada’s published position on tanning is one sentence: “There is no safe way to tan.”
Heat and sweat also shorten the tan you already paid for, so this is the rare case where the tempting shortcut is worse on both counts. Book another appointment instead. The comparison between sunless and ultraviolet tanning is set out in full, with sources, on is spray tanning safe.
When should I book so it looks best on the day?
Count backwards from the event rather than forwards from today. Most people look their best on days two to four, once the guide colour is gone and before any fading starts, so book so your appointment falls two or three days before the thing you care about. That also leaves a day spare if anything needs adjusting, which is worth more than the extra depth of colour you get by going later.
For a wedding the sequencing is stricter, because the dress, the hair and the nails all interact with it. That has its own page: bridal and wedding tans. If you are going somewhere hot, the pool and the salt water change the maths, and that is covered on before a vacation. If you are fitting it around waxing, nails or a haircut, the order matters more than the gap: what to book before and after a spray tan.
